While yes this could just be my personal preferences, and I know there are people out there who prefer that the blocky look fit in quite well with the grid based mapping system MZ has, but I don’t think it will hurt anyone to have it switch back to XP style of autotiles since you can also create both blocky and round-ish looking autotiles with that format.

RPG Maker MZ use the sub grid autotiles format while XP use a full grid autotiles format The autotiles system are still using the ugly autotiles format from VX and result in this very ugly, blocky, inorganic look, and it hurt the most when you use it to draw nature scenery like lake or dirt path, etc…

For example, tileset are still limited to specific sheet size like 768x768 for B,C,D,E tiles instead of having basically unlimited as big as you want to be sheet in XP, while I understand this could cause memory issue, but if the optimization are done well enough in the first place, having a bit of extra space for some more tiles sure wouldn’t hurt anyone. Speaking of RPG Maker XP also known as the best version of RPG Maker for mapping, a lot of feature from XP are still missing in MZ. My suggestion is that they just add a button for each layer in the toolbar just like RPG Maker XP, or having some sort of shortcut to switch between each layers.Ĭome on KADOKAWA, it's the year 2020, why are we still lacking some of most simple feature on a game engine Yes, it doesn’t take that much time to do those stuff, but that time will eventually add up when you start making dozens to hundreds maps for your project. “But it doesn’t actually take that much time to click through all of those stuff” You guys have the effort to make hotkey for stuff like Database and Plugin Manager but not layers and map brushes? Also, when hover your mouse over each tool, there is a little piece of text popup, you should add a hotkey into it to make it easier to learn than having to click on the Menu Bar to know what are the hotkey for the each tool. But same situation for different map brush, it’s the year 2020 and we still don’t have any hotkey for them. (And I do have to admit that yes automatic layer are a lot better compare to MV). First, as far as I know, the only way to change between each different layer while mapping is to go all the way to the Menu Bar, click Layer, then select the layer you wanted to draw on, it’s almost like they are trying to hide it to make the engine even less overwhelming for beginner to use, which I can understand as a design decision. While it does looks good or surface, as someone who do mapping a lot, I still find the map editor of MZ is to be extremely lackluster. The new QOL improvement which help organize the order of each map within the map list is also a very welcomed change and make me wonder why only up until now they finally decided to do it. And with the introduction of the “brand new” ( definitively not an old feature in older version of the engine that was loved everyone but for some who know reason got removed ) layer system, the mapping system just got a lot more powerful and better. When you first open RPG Maker, one of the things that you will likely get your hand on first is the map editor. So, prepare yourself, because this post could be quite painful to go through.

His video showcasing everything new stuff in MZ from the brand-new Animation and Battle system to the other smaller Quality of Life changes. While I could definitely try to sum up all the new features that the engine has to offer, SRDude has made an entire video covering every change made to MZ that is much better than anything I could ever done. I am sure by now if you have been following the RPG Maker scene that you’ve heard enough stuff about RPG Maker MZ already. Well, at least that is what they say on their brand new rpgmakerweb website. It’s the latest and the most powerful, versatile version in the RPG Maker series, with new features and enhancements to older features, this RPG Maker is set to become the best RPG Maker to date!
